Course overview:

This course has been designed and developed for people working with babies, toddlers and children who have a duty to provide emergency first aid cover until professional help arrives. It has been designed to give the learner the knowledge and practical skills to recognise and treat a number of injuries, conditions and illnesses that are common to babies, toddlers and children from birth to 18.

The learner will be assessed through ongoing practical observations and a multi choice written exam at the end of the session. Each learner if applicable, will receive a QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First aid.

Course learning outcomes:

By the end of the day, learners should be able to:

• Describe the role of the paediatric first aider
• Explain what to do with emergencies
• Demonstrate what to do with an unresponsive, breathing and non-
breathing casualty
• Discuss, practice and perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and
recovery position
• Cite the recognition features and treatment of a choking casualty
• Recognize and treat a child in shock
• Discuss and demonstrate the effective treatment of a life
threatening external bleed
• Discuss common chronic medical conditions and sudden illness
• Discuss and demonstrate appropriate treatment of bites, stings and
minor injuries.
