Course overview:

This qualification develops the learner's knowledge, understanding and skills in delivering first aid in an early year setting. The qualification is ideal for those seeking employment or those already in employment who are looking to progress.

The qualification supports employers to meet their regulatory requirements.

Course learning outcomes:

By the end of the day, learners should be able to:

• Describe the role of the paediatric first aider
• Explain what to do with emergencies
• Demonstrate what to do with an unresponsive, breathing, and non-
breathing casualty
• Discuss, practice and perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and
recovery position
• Cite the recognition features and treatment of a choking casualty
• Recognise and treat a child in shock
• Discuss and demonstrate the effective treatment of a life-
threatening external bleed
• Discuss common chronic medical conditions and sudden illness
• Discuss and demonstrate appropriate treatment of Bites, Stings,
Small cuts, Grazes, Bumps and bruises, small splinters and Nose
bleeds
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected injuries to
bones, muscles and joints
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected head and
spinal injuries
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with conditions affecting the
eyes, ears and nose
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with an acute medical
condition or sudden illness including diabetic hypoglycaemic
emergency • asthma attack • allergic reaction • meningitis • febrile
convulsions
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing extremes
of body temperature
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child who has sustained an electric
shock
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with burns and scalds
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with suspected poisoning
• Provide first aid to an infant or a child with anaphylaxis
